Freezing Rain?

(What I miss about camping. Image courtesy of Phoric.org)

I learned another difference between Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario today and that is the difference in definition of freezing rain. Southern Ontarians call hail freezing rain.

All week-end they kept saying we were going to be getting freezing rain and possibly snow. I'm thinking that I would rather the snow than freezing rain cause freezing rain is messy and wet. When I wake up this morning to the radio saying we got freezing rain I really didn't want to get out of bed. When I look out the window I find that it's not raining it's hailing! Good grief people! Rain is wet! Hail is frozen and therefore dry! There is a difference!

So begins a crazy traffic day in the big city. These people do not know how to drive or even how to function in a little bad winter weather. It's sad. There were people walking down the sidewalk this morning with umbrellas! Why does one need an umbrella when it's hailing?? It's not like you're gonna get wet without one. I don't think I will ever fit in here.

I will admit that I underestimated the messiness of the sidewalks and wore heels to work today. I should have pulled out my winter boots. Ah well too late now.

Four days till I get to be off in a cabin in the woods! Yay! Hello trees, rocks, lake, campfire, hot tub, snow and SILENCE!

I have to remember to charge up all my camera batteries so I can take LOTS of winter pictures. I might actually have a Southern Ontario winter picture for my Christmas card next year. Well maybe not. I actually took one while I was at home for Christmas that I think I'm going to use.

This cabin is 3 hours out of town. Stuart is hoping to get a half day off work on Friday so that we can leave early and check in on time. He isn't sure he'll get it but he's going to try. I took the day off and I am going to thoroughly enjoy it. I'm supposed to be making lunch on Saturday so I've decided I'm making a soup and grilled cheese sandwiches.

I'm most looking forward to making smores over the campfire. I really miss that. I love the smell of campfire.

Okay, so I'm a bit of a geek for saying this, but it needs to be said:
Technically there IS a difference between hail and F.R.

Freezing Rain is when wet precipitation (drops of rain) fall from the sky and freeze only just above the ground (the last 10m or so of the drop). So it starts out wet as it falls and freezes just before impact.

Hail is when the drop of wet precipitation is too light and a gust of wind will blow it back into the cloud to freeze again, and gather more drops around it, blow back up, refreeze, etc... Until eventually the 20+ layers of freezing make the drop too big to be blown back up and fall again.

It's not just a NWO/SO thing, it's science!
